A new HBO documentary aims to shed light on the identity of Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

What's the Scoop?

  • Upcoming Release: The documentary, "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Bitcoin Mystery," will be available on Oct. 9 and is directed by Cullen Hoback.
  • Identity Claim: Galaxy Digital's Head of Research suggested that the documentary proposes Len Sassaman, a famed cypherpunk who died in 2011, as Nakamoto.
  • Controversy Expected: The director, Cullen Hoback, anticipates that the conclusion will spark debate, regardless of the evidence presented.

Bankless Take:

This documentary is set to stir up one of the most debated topics in crypto. While it’s easy to question any claims about Nakamoto’s identity, if Len Sassaman is named, it will no doubt provoke discussion, especially given his memorial inscribed on Bitcoin. Given the breadth of people who have claimed to be Nakamoto over the years, it will be difficult, if impossible, for this documentary to conclusively answer the question of who Nakamoto is.
