This morning, U.S. Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.

What's the Scoop?

  • Polymarket Polymarket Odds: Prior to the announcement, bettors on Polymarket had Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro at 57% and Walz at 40%, with earlier odds favoring North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.
  • Crypto Regulation: Walz has not openly discussed crypto. However, Minnesota, under his tenure, enacted laws to regulate crypto kiosks.
  • Campaign Outreach: Harris’ team started engaging with the crypto sector after President Biden endorsed her. They recently hired David Plouffe, a crypto advocate and Binance Binance Global Advisory Board member.

Bankless Take

While Harris’ selection of Tim Walz officially marks the next stage of the election campaign, it is unclear what it means for crypto. As Governor of Minnesota, his administration implemented some crypto-related regulation in the state, he has been silent on the topic otherwise. Further, while  Harris has been reported as being interested in being more crypto-forward, direct efforts have yet to materialize — outside of the recent hire of David Plouffe.
