Freedom Factory has announced the dGEN1, a mobile device aimed at simplifying how users interact with Ethereum Ethereum and Layer 2s.

What's the scoop?

  • The new everyday carry (EDC) is being built atop a forked version of Android and has integrated Freedom Factory’s bespoke, Ethereum-centric ethOS operating system.
  • The dGEN1 also features two touchscreens and is designed to readily interact with onchain platforms without browser extensions or third-party apps.
  • Although the device will lack telecom capabilities, it will offer crypto-based messaging for secure communications and an in-built Ethereum light node for validating transactions.
  • Pre-orders are available as NFT mints for 0.2 ETH on Base, with shipping expected in Spring 2025.

Bankless take

By bringing Ethereum to the mobile OS level and supporting L2s, Freedom Factory is positioning this optimized hardware wallet to meet the needs of Ethereum users who want a streamlined way to take more control over their onchain activities. However, its success will hinge on 1) the quality of execution, and 2) user adoption in the face of incumbents like Ledger Ledger once it's on the market. Let’s see if they can pull it off!
